How To Write A Broken Heart Letter

So it has finally happened to you, something you probably thought – or hoped – never would. You fell in love head over heels with someone, so hard that there was simply no way out but to finally tell him or her how you felt. And when you did, you made the awful discovery that he or she felt nothing for you like the feeling you had just expressed. You are now the owner of a broken heart, due to that old tragic plot device – unrequited love. Because in fact, the person you just gushed about your love to would rather simply be friends, as you had always been. But now everything would be different, because he or she knew your real feelings, and how could you just be a friend knowing that? Maybe you should try a letter to smooth things over. Here are some tips on how to write a broken heart love letter.

DON’T HOLD BACK

If you approach this letter as a message of love, you’ll have the right attitude. You should include the facts as you see them, and feel them, about the relationship has arrived at this point. Review your history together, starting with the first time you met. If you have dated, talk about the places you’ve been and the memories you cherish of happier times. The important thing is to be truthful (don’t make up stuff for dramatic effect) and honest about how the whole thing progressed. And be sure to lay out the fact that he or she has broken your heart, even as your love for him or her carries on.

DON’T HESITATE TO BE SENTIMENTAL

Yes, talk about your actual feelings, not only love, but shock, disappointment, regret, anything that you are actually feeling as you write. A love letter about your broken heart has 2 main messages – love for the heart-breaker, and the way it feels to have a broken heart. You can’t express these sentiments without being “sentimental” – meaning that you have to discuss feelings.

DON’T APOLOGIZE

Once you have communicated your main messages, don’t backpedal in any way. Saying you are sorry is not a good idea because it implies that you have done something wrong. From your point of view, this person might have been (possibly still could be?) the love of your life, so you did the right thing by falling in love. And you are doing the right thing by expressing yourself in writing, in an honest and non-hysterical way. This is very important advice and you have to remember about it while writing your letter..

DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE FUTURE

Finally, you should realize that it’s only natural to think about the remote chance that things might work out between the two of you. After all, stranger things have happened. Of course, you have to understand and accept the other person’s feelings and thoughts, in the most respectful and loving way possible. But holding back for fear of nothing happening won’t help, because it’s essentially dishonest. You have to say what you feel with no regard for how it will affect your own future, or any future that might be out there for the two of you together.
